Northumberland OPP – Four Drivers Arrested for Impaired Driving This Family Day Long Weekend

The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) made four arrests for impaired driving this Family Day long weekend.

(MUNICIPALITY OF BRIGHTON, ON) – At approximately 7:45 pm on Friday February 12, 2021, a black Acura four door sedan approached a RIDE check point being conducted on County Road 30. Officers detected the odour of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the driver. A Roadside Screening Device (ASD) was administered to the vehicle operator at the scene resulting in a “fail”. The driver was arrested and transpor ted to the OPP detachment in Brighton for further testing.
As a result of the investigation Thomas LIGHTOWLERS (age 29) of Quinte West, Ontario was arrested and charged with:
Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
Operation while impaired – alcohol

(MUNICIPALITY OF PORT HOPE, ON) – Trevor MADILL (age 20) of Port Hope, Ontario, was arrested and charged with Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), as a result of a police investigation into a collision that occurred on Saturday Feburary 13, 2021, at approximately 12:30 am on Gilmour Road involving a silver Nissan four door sedan the accused was driving. The accused did not sustain any injuries as a result of the collision.

(MUNICIPALITY OF BRIGHTON, ON) – Just be fore noon on Sunday February 14, 2021, officers responded to reports of a suspected impaired driver in a while Chevrolet passenger van travelling eastbound on Highway 401 near Port Hope. The vehicle was described as travelling at inconsistent speeds, being unable to maintain travelling in a marked lane and almost causing a collision. Officers located the vehicle and attempted to stop it for several kilometeres before it finally stopped on Highway 401 just west of County Road 30 in Brighton. The driver was displaying signs of impairment and was placed under arrest for Operation of a motor vehicle while impaired then transported to the Quinte West OPP Detachment for further testing. As a result of the investigation Samantha CABEZAS (age 34) of Quinte West, Ontario, was arrested and charged under the Criminal Code of Canada with:
Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
Operation while impaired – alcohol
Dangerous operation
Flight from peace officer
The accused was additionally charged with several offences under the Highway Traffic Act including Novice driver – B.A.C. above zero.

(ALNWICK-HALDIMAND TOWNSHIP ON,) – On Sunday February 14, 2021, at approximately 4:00 pm an officer was travelling eastbound on Highway 401 just east of Lyle Street, observed a grey Nissan SUV weaving in and out of the lane it was travelling in. The vehicle almost hit the centre median and merely missed colliding with another motorist. The officer pulled the vehicle over and found the driver to be under the influence of alcohol. As a result of the investigation, Stephen MCGINN (age 39) of Warkworth, Ontario was arrested and charged with:
< li> Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

All four accused received an immediate 90 day licence suspension and the vehicles they were driving were towed and impounded. They were released and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on scheduled dates in March and April, 2021.
The OPP remains committed to enforcing impaired driving laws and educating road users about the dangers posed by motorists who drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Drivers need to remember that any amount of alcohol or drugs can impair one’s ability to drive.
