Northumberland OPP – Suspicious Vehicle Results in Criminal Charges

Members from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle on Percy Street in the village of Castleton during the early morning hours of Saturday February 6, 2021.

At approximately 1:00 am, residents of Castleton called police to report that a blue Dodge camper van was parked nearby for a lengthy period of time and the vehicles horn was blaring. When a couple went outside to check to see what was happening the driver of the van allegedly drove in an aggressive manner toward them.

Police located the vehicle parked on Haynes Road and observed an individual within the vehicle matching the descriptors provided. After a conversation with the driver, the investigating officer suspected the driver had been consuming alcohol. The officer made an Approved Screening Device (ASD) demand; however the driver refused to provide a suitable sample of breath into the ASD.

As a result Raymond BOYLE (age 63) of Belleville, Ontario was arrested and charged with:
· Fail or refuse to provide a breath sample
· Dangerous operation

The accused received an immediate 90 day licence supension, and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on April 14, 2021. The involved vehicle was towed and impounded.

The Northumberland OPP would like to remind the public that failing to provide a suitable sample of breath upon an officers demand carries the same consequences as ‘Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs’, and ‘Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)’.

The OPP remains committed to enforcing impaired driving laws and educating road users about the dangers posed by motorists who drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
