Northumberland OPP – Driver Charged With Impaired By Drug in Brighton

On Monday August 31, 2020, at approximately 7:00 pm, members from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint involving a silver coloured Ford four door sedan travelling eastbound on County Road 2 towards the town of Brighton.

Several motorists described the vehicle as swerving into oncoming traffic and travelling at inconsistent speeds. The sedan eventually proceeded to drive up onto a curb colliding with a parked vehicle before coming to a rest on the sidewalk out front of a residence on Main Street.

Officers arrived on scene and upon speaking with the driver, it became apparent the individual was displaying signs of impairment. The driver was arrested for impaired operation then transported to the OPP detachment in Cobourg where a Drug Recognition Evaluation (DRE) was completed.

As a result of the investigation Ashley Dawn GIROUARD (age 33) of Quinte West, Ontario, was charged with:

· Operation while Impaired alcohol and drugs

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on November 4, 2020.

Police continue to rely on members of the public to report suspected impaired drivers. Many of these drivers are caught because of concerned citizens being conscious of irregular or erratic driving behaviours that continue to put other motorists at risk.

The Northumberland County OPP reminds motorists that any amount of alcohol or drugs can impact your ability to make sound judgements
