Northumberland OPP – Two Individuals Charged With Impaired Driving in Brighton

On Monday August 17, 2020, members from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) charged two motor vehicle operators with impaired driving within 24 hours in the town of Brighton.

Just after midnight, an officer observed a Blue Nissan SUV travelling westbound on County Road 2 just west of the town of Brighton. The vehicle was being driven in a manner that indicated the driver may possibly be impaired. The SUV was stopped as it turned onto Simpson Street. The officer found the driver to be under the influence of alcohol. As a result of the investigation, Daniel AVILA (age) 41 of Scarborough, Ontario, was arrested and charged with Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).

On the same date at approximately 10:45 pm, officers stopped a blue Kia four door hatchback sedan after it was observed having difficulty navigating a bend and hitting a curb on George Street. The officer administered a roadside screening device test at the location and the driver registered a “fail”. The driver was arrested then transported back to the OPP detachment in Brighton for further testing. Ryan HUNT (age 43) of Brighton, Ontario was charged with Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).

Both of the accused received an immediate 90 day licence suspension and the vehicles they were driving were towed and impounded. They were released from police custody and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on scheduled dates in October 2020.

The OPP would like to remind motorists that highway safety is a shared responsibility. If you choose to consume alcohol or drugs, plan ahead to ensure that yourself and others travelling our roadways arrive home safely.
