Northumberland OPP – Tractor Trailer Operator Charged with Impaired Driving

(MUNICIPALITY OF PORT HOPE, ON) – At approximately 3:45 am on June 26, 2020 members from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a jack knifed tractor trailer on Highway 401 eastbound near the off ramp to the ONroute Service Centre in Port Hope.

Officers arrived on scene and found the jack knifed tractor trailer was blocking two lanes of the highway. Upon speaking with the driver, it became apparent the individual was displaying signs of impairment. The officer conducted a standardized field sobriety test (SFST) at the scene to which the driver performed poorly. The driver was arrested and transported to the Northumberland OPP detachment in Cobourg to perform the drug recognition evaluation.

Further investigation found the driver to be in possession of a quantity of suspected crystal methamphetamine.

As a result of the investigation Dwight BURGESS (age 50) of Newfoundland and Labrador has been arrested and charged with:

· Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
· Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking
· Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on August 26, 2020.
