Update on the Ummati Cemetery Proposal for Cramahe Township

CRAMAHE TOWNSHIP – There is 6:30 p.m. planning/public meeting followed by a Cramahe Twp. council meeting tonight, Jan. 7, at the municipal building in Colborne.

Please note: the proposed Ummati Cemetery is NOT on any agendas for tonight’s meetings, Jan. 7.

People may be unclear about where we are at with the Ummati Cemetery proposal. Here is reiteration:

The Cramahe Twp. Dec. 18, 2019 press release states that the proposed Ummati Cemetery will be considered by Council on January 28, 2020.

It also states the council meeting on the 28th will consider a Planning Report that discusses the proposed cemetery and role of the municipality. In that Planning Report, will be recommendation that Council do one of three things:

1. Give notice of a municipal decision to approve  the cemetery; or

2.  Give notice of a municipal decision to refuse the cemetery; or

3. Decide to hold a public hearing, under Sections 84(4)(b) and 85 of the Funerals, Burials and Cremation Services Act 2002, to determine if municipal approval is in the public interest.

Thus far, two delegation requests for the January 28, 2020 council meeting have been received. In accordance with our Procedural By-law, only persons registered as a delegation will be able to address council regarding this matter on the 28th, except in the open question period between the Council in Committee and Council meetings.

So, the proposed Cemetery is NOT on tonight’s agenda. Further, do not come to the meeting on the 28th expecting a Public Hearing to take place as part of the council meeting. If council chooses the third option (as above) on January 28, then a separate date will be set for a Public Hearing at a later date.
