A dramatic conclusion following a pursuit that spanned from Peterborough to Port Hope on January 1, 2020.
The pursuit ended shortly before 1 p.m. after Northumberland OPP extricated a driver from his vehicle by smashing the driver’s side window.
Northumberland OPP Sgt. Mark Collins said the drama began when officers with the Peterborough Police Service began pursuing a vehicle.
“They terminated that for safety and let us know that they were trying to stop a vehicles which was unsuccessful.”
A short time later a Peterborough OPP officer noticed the vehicle travelling southbound on County Road 28 and initiated a pursuit, which was once again called off due to safety concerns.
Peterborough OPP notified Northumberland OPP who set-up in the area of County Road 28 at Dale Road.
Northumberland OPP were prepared with a spike belt, but as traffic was backed up, the suspects vehicle became stopped in the traffic.
With the amount of distance the vehicle travelled, Collins said it was “extremely dangerous.”
When the driver wouldn’t exit the vehicle, police broke the driver’s side window to gain access. He was forcibly removed from the vehicle arrested.
A 27-year-old Cobourg man is facing several charges including dangerous driving and flight from police.
