Cobourg Couple Celebrates 60th Anniversary with Love Lock

A Cobourg couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary placing a love lock in Rotary Waterfront Park on Albert Street on Thursday, May 16, 2019.

Cobourg’s Love Locks overlooks Midtown Creek in Rotary Harbourfront Park.

Love Locks are inspired by an ancient custom where people in love, lock a padlock on a chain or a bridge and take away the key, symbolically locking their love forever.

William (age 82) and Georgina Hagemeyer (age 79) were married on may 16, 1959 in Montreal and moved to Cobourg in March, 1982.
Cathy Cope is one of the four children and helped arrange the ceremony on Thursday in Cobourg.

A lock was passed down Georgina Hagemeyer’s father and the couple placed the lock on the bridge overlooking Midtown Creek.
“It’s an amazing day,” said a beaming Georgina.

“I never dreamed in my life that we’d be here for our 60th.”

When the couple celebrated their 50th anniversary, William said, “that’s about it, I don’t think we’ll see 60.”

“And now I’m saying, maybe 70, so book an appointment.”

The lock had been in the family for decades, but they both thought it was the perfect way to cap off the anniversary.
