Exclusive – Friends Helping Friends In Downtown Cobourg Stops Theft of Clothing

Friends helping friends in downtown Cobourg prevented a theft of numerous items on Monday, April 15, 2019.

At approximately 10:37 a.m. Darryl Hunter was working at Cobourg’s Buy and Sell on King Street near Second Street when he received a call from a clerk at a neighbouring business asking for assistance.

The woman had suspicions of a person trying on a number of items of clothing in the store and contacted Hunter.

“I rushed right over,” said Hunter speaking to Today’s Northumberland.

“He was in the dressing room when I got in there.  She was telling him to take off all the clothes he had put under his original clothes and he had a lot of stuff.”

The suspect was wearing numerous items including two sweaters, two jackets, two jeans, a t-shirt, and a hat (totaling over $300) on top of the clothes he wore into the store.

The clerk told him to go back into the dressing room and take off items that weren’t his.

But when he came out, he still had numerous clothes on from the store.

“He started getting aggressive and started charging at me to get out the (front) door,” said Hunter.

“I stopped him, but then he decided he would try and get around me and go out the back door.”

Hunter ran after him and that’s where the suspect started to get very aggressive.

“I grabbed a hold of him and subdued him.”

Video shows the suspect trying to break free of Hunter then the two men fall to the floor.  The clerk locked the door in case the suspect got free and tried to bolt, but Hunter stayed on top until three Cobourg Police officers arrived very quickly and arrested the suspect.

Hunter said all the businesses downtown are family run, “and we’ve got to look out for each other.”

The clerk at the store was very grateful for Hunter’s quick actions.

“He was fantastic and super helpful.”

“I’m very thankful to have good neighbours.”

Twenty-nine-year-old Peter Munro of Cobourg is charged with theft under $5000, possession of property obtained by crime and two counts of fail to comply with probation.

Munro was released on a promise to appear and officer in charge undertaking.
