Northumberland OPP – Novice Driver Charged

On March 24, 2019 an officer from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) charged a novice licenced driver with several offences as a result of a traffic stop.

Just after 3:00 pm an officer stopped a silver Honda sedan travelling eastbound on Highway 401 after it was measured travelling 170 km/h. The male driver was found to be a class G1 licenced driver and under the influence of alcohol. An Approved Screening Device (A.S.D.) test was administered on the driver which registered an “ALERT” reading. As a result of the investigation Trenlin Troy Aaron SMART (age 23) of Cobourg, Ontario was charged with the following offences under the Highway Traffic Act:
· Race a motor vehicle
· Novice Driver Blood Alcohol Content (B.A.C) above zero
· Class G1 licence holder – drive on prohibited highway
· Class G1 licence holder – unaccompanied by qualified driver

The accused licence was suspended and the vehicle he was driving was towed and impounded for seven days. He is scheduled to appear in Cobourg court on May 8, 2019.
