The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with 185 incidents this past week, here are some examples:
December 3
At approximately 10:30 am 19 year-old Makhosini ZIKHALI from Whitby, Ontario was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with race a motor vehicle. The black sedan he was driving was stopped by an officer after it was measured travelling 164 km/h in a posted 100 km/h zone on Highway 401 in the Municipality of Brighton. His driver’s licence was seized and suspended for 7 days, and the vehicle he was driving was towed and impounded for seven days. The male is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on February 6, 2019.
A 60 year-old man from Cramahe Township was arrested and charged with assault after police investigated a report of a domestic incident that had occurred on the previous day. The accused male was released and is scheduled to appear in court on a date in January 2019.
December 4
At approximately 6:30 am officers received a report of stolen vehicle described as a 2016 grey Mazda CX5 from the driveway of a residence on Aird Street, near Grafton in Alnwick-Haldimand Township. There was a blue pick-up truck in the drive way as well that was rummaged through which is where the suspect(s) allegedly found spare keys used to steal the Mazda CX5. On Wednesday November 5, 2018 police recovered the stolen vehicle near a cemetery located on Aird Street. Investigation continuing.*
December 5
Officers charged 50 year-old Sanjaya WICKREMASINGHE from Mississauga, Ontario under the Highway Traffic Act with race a motor vehicle after the vehicle he was driving passed a marked cruiser at a high rate of speed on Highway 401 eastbound in Alnwick-Haldimand Township. The officer paced the vehicle travelling at 160 km/h. The male’s licence was seized and suspended for 7 days and the motor vehicle he was driving was towed and impounded for 7 days. He is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on January 9, 2019.
Officers of the Northumberland OPP were conducting R.I.D.E. on County Road 45 in Alnwick-Haldimand Township. At approximately 4:30 pm a female driving a grey sedan approached the officers at the check point. Officers entered into an impaired by drug investigation. As a result of the investigation police arrested and charged 56 year-old Margaret BEATTY of Port Hope, Ontario under the Criminal Code of Canada with Care or Control While Impaired by Drug. The accused received an immediate 90 day driver’s licence suspension and further had her vehicle towed and impounded. She was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on December 19, 2018.
December 6
Police stopped a red sedan just before 6:30 pm, after officers measured it travelling 128 km/h westbound on H ighway 401 in Alnwick-Haldimand Township. Upon speaking to the female driver, the officer entered into an impaired by drug investigation. As a result of the investigation a 24 year-old female from Quebec was charged under the Cannabis Control Act with drive a vehicle with cannabis readily available and charged under the Highway Traffic Act with speeding. The females had her licence suspended for three days and her vehicle was towed.
Officers also investigated 16 accidental 911 calls/alarms, 11 motor vehicle collisions; 34 traffic related complaints and conducted 18 RIDE programs during this time period.
