Free, fun and family-friendly are favourite adjectives for a summer tradition in Cobourg – Movies In The Park.
A press release from the town has announced this summer’s line-up in Victoria Park, a collection of comedy, action and mystery suitable for all members of the family.
Starting at 8:30 p.m., see A Wrinkle In Time July 14, Sherlock Gnomes Aug. 4 and The Boss Baby Aug. 25.
The films give friends and family members an opportunity to bring popcorn, blankets and lawn chairs for a relaxing evening under the stars, as they watch amazing movies projected on to a giant inflatable outdoor movie screen from a powerful video projector (with concert-quality sound system).
Councillor Suzanne Seguin, co-ordinator of community services, is delighted with the choice of films.
“What a unique opportunity for citizens of all ages to come out and enjoy a movie under the stars in the tranquil setting of beautiful Victoria Park,” Seguin said in the press release.
As always, the first August movie is incorporated into the town’s popular Sand Castle Festival as part of the festivities. This year, the movie is also presented in partnership with the Marie Dressler Foundation as a kick-off to some wonderful fall events that will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Cobourg-born Oscar-winning actress.
The foundation has arranged for popcorn to be sold for $1 a bag in tribute to a business the actress ran before her big Hollywood heyday.
The town also thanks other movie sponsors this year, including Cameco and New Amherst Homes.
The Beach Hutt canteen and adjacent washrooms will remain open during each movie. As well, everyone is reminded that all metered parking remains in effect, although parking along the waterfront is free after 6 p.m. during weekends.
The press release noted that the Movies In The Park program is subject to cancellation in case of such dangerous weather conditions as lightning. Notice of cancellation will be posted on the both the Cobourg Tourism website (cobourgtourism.ca) and the municipality’s website (Cobourg.ca).
