Northumberland OPP Media Release – Calls For Service
(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with 201 incidents this past weekend, here are some examples:
May 4:
- Sometime within the past month unknown suspect(s) used a large rock (and a vehicle) in an apparent attempt to create a hole in the perimeter fence of the Brighton Union Gas distribution station o n County Road 26. No entry was apparently gained. Investigation ongoing.*
- Shortly after midnight police responded to a report of a possible impaired driver in Alnwick-Haldimand Township. Officers located the red SUV travelling on Elgin Street in the Town of Cobourg. The driver, who had been drinking, was arrested and taken to the Cobourg Detachment for further tests. As a result of these tests, Sherry Irene CHALLONER age 51 of Newtonville, Ontario is charged with Care & Control of a motor vehicle while her blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. She was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on June 6, 2018.
- At approximately 1:00 p.m. police received a complaint of a hitchhiker jumping into traffic on County Road 30 south of County Road 29 in the Municipality of Brighton. Officers located the male pedest rian who had been drinking and recovered a recently stolen bottle of liquor from the Warkworth LCBO. Richard Derek ADRIAANS age 26 of Trenton, Ontario is charged with two counts of Fail to Comply with Probation Order, Theft Under $5,000 and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime – under $5,000. He was held for a bail hearing resulting in his release with a court date of May 16, 2018 at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg.
- Officers attended in excess of thirty weather related calls including wires or trees down on roadways from approximately 4:00 p.m. to midnight.
- (A young child playing with his grandmother’s cell phone dialled 9-1-1 from a Hamilton Township home at 8:30 p.m. because he wanted to watch ‘The Wiggles’ children’s show causing officers to attend and ensure no emergency existed during this very busy time).
- May 5:
- Officers continued to respond to weather related calls (eleven) throughout the day.
- A Brighton resident dialled 9-1-1 to inquiry about her hydro outage. Officers attended to ensure there was no emergency and cautioned her regarding misuse of the emergency number. She was advised to find the appropriate number on her hydro bill (Hydro One outages: 1-800-434-1235).
- A Colborne resident on Streamside Drive reported his vehicle’s rear window smashed sometime overnight.*
- Damages were reported at the Memory Junction Railway Museum in Brighton over the past two days (a door and window to the engine were damaged as the result of most probably being kicked). No entry was gained.*
- May 6:
- At 1:49 p.m. police responded to a single motor vehicle collision on County Road 24 involving a motorcycle that lost control on a corner near the hamlet of Dartford in the Municipality of Trent Hills. The operator, a 31 year old local man who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Technical Collision Investigators and Reconstructionists assisted detachment officers at the scene. The Coroner attended the scene and ordered a post mortem to be completed in Kingston. The investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing.
- At 11:00 p.m. an officer stopped a grey sedan on County Road 30 near Highway 401 in the Municipality of Brighton to determine the sobriety of the driver. As a result of a roadside test, the driver was arrested and taken to the Quinte West OPP Detachment for further tests. As a result of these tests, Natalie EICKHOFF age 54 of Brighton, Ontario is charged with Care & Control of a motor vehicle while her blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. She was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on June 6, 2018.
- Police received a complaint of a dead animal carcass in a bag discarded in the ditch on Cranberry Road in the Municipality of Port Hope. Officers confirmed the contents were of a small animal and notified the Municipality for removal.
- Northumberland OPP officers investigated twelve accidental 9-1-1 calls, ten motor vehicle collisions, 67 traffic/weather related complaints and conducted thirteen RIDE programs over the weekend.
