Pair Plucked From Small Island by SARTECS from 424 Squadron
Two people were rescued by helicopter after their boat capsized near Belmont Lake overnight. The pair were rescued Search and Rescue Technicians from 424 Squadron after the pair were stranded on a small island with fast moving water surrounding it. Family members were concerned when the pair didn’t return home. The pair were safe, and communicated with their rescuers nearby, but because of the fast moving water the safest way to remove them from the small island was by helicopter.
TWO PEOPLE RESCUED FROM CROWE RIVER
(HAVELOCK-BELMONT-METHUEN TOWNSHIP, ON) – Members of the Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and emergency crews were called to assist two people stranded on an island in the middle of the Crowe River near Fire Route 18 on May 6 around 7:00am.
The two individuals decided to head out onto the river by canoe on Saturday evening around 6:00pm. The canoe capsized and the occupants managed to swim to a nearby island. Due to the high and fast-moving waters they were unable to make it to shore and spent the night on the island. The following morning their calls for help were heard and emergency crews were dispatched.
The individuals were removed from the island by a helicopter from Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC Trenton). The Havelock-Belmont-Methuen Township Fire Services, along with Cavan-Monaghan Township Fire Services, Douro-Dummer Township Fire Services, Peterborough County OPP Marine Unit, and the OPP helicopter all assisted with the rescue.
The OPP wishes to remind everyone to be careful as the water levels are high and moving fast in some areas. Always wear a lifejacket or personal floatation device when out on the waterways.
