Suspect Faces More Than 330 Firearms Charges – Durham Region

Investigators have charged a second suspect after police seized 33 guns and carfentanil from a Pickering residence in September 2017. 

On March 9, 2018, with the assistance of the Edmonton Police Service, a search warrant was executed at a residential address on Albany Way Northwest in Edmonton.  The suspect who was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant was arrested at the scene and police seized approximately $180,000 in Canadian currency.

Babar ALI, age 30 of Toronto is facing 337 firearms-related charges and Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking of a Schedule I Substance (carfentanil). He was returned to Durham Region and was held for a bail hearing.

Suspect Faces More Than 330 Firearms Charges

The laboratory results from Health Canada confirmed the substance taken out of a Pickering residence last month was carfentanil.

On Wednesday, September 20, 2017 police seized 53 kgs of unknown substances from a Pickering residence and 42 kgs of this has been positively identified as carfentanil a deadly street drug. Carfentanil or carfentanyl is a synthetic opioid similar to fentanyl but 100 times more potent. This narcotic is marketed as a tranquilizer for large animals. A very small amount of this drug can be lethal. The total seizure equals 420,000 doses of carfentanil with a street value estimated at $13 million dollars.

Maisum ANSARI, age 33 of New Providence Street in Oshawa, has been arrested and charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking of a Schedule I Substance (carfentanil). He was held for a bail hearing.

Suspect Faces More Than 330 Firearms Charges

Police seized 33 guns and other prohibited devices, such as overcapacity magazines, from a Pickering residence yesterday and laid 337 charges against the homeowner.

On Wednesday, September 20, 2107, Pickering Fire was responding to a carbon monoxide alarm at a home on Liatris Drive when they noticed a suspicious substance in the basement. They alerted police who began to investigate. The Drug Enforcement Unit was called in and they obtained a search warrant for the residence. The OPP Clandestine Lab team also attended to ensure the material found was handled safely.

An unidentified substance was found, along with 33 guns and other prohibited devices, such as overcapacity magazines. The substance has been sent for testing.

Maisum ANSARI, age 33 of New Providence Street in Oshawa, is facing 337 firearms charges including Careless Storage of a Firearm; Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm; Possess a Restricted or Prohibited Firearm Knowing its Possession if Unauthorized; and Possession of a Prohibited Device.
