March Targeted Traffic Enforcement and Education: Traffic Light Offences

During the month of March the Traffic Services Unit will focus on traffic light offences. This targeted enforcement is in addition to regular traffic enforcement and education the Unit provides on a daily basis.

These offences relate to people disobeying traffic signals including:

• Red light $325 and 3 demerit points
• Amber light $180 and 3 demerit points
• Green arrow-fail to proceed as directed $110 and 3 demerit points
• Fail to yield to pedestrian $180 and 3 demerit points
• Fail to obey crossing guard sign $180 and 3 demerit points

“The main traffic light offences we see is people failing to stop at a red or amber light,” says Traffic Services Unit Constable Bruce Brunsch.

“One of the leading causes of collisions is driver inattention. Drivers need to be paying attention 100 per cent of the time. Driving should not be a time to catch up.”

Our Service reminds motorists to plan ahead and leave extra time to get to their destination, keep their focus on the road and be mindful of pedestrians, cyclists and school crossings.

We also remind pedestrians and cyclists that they are also required to obey the traffic signals.

Everyone has a role to play in road safety.

 

Drug Trafficking Arrest:

A 22-year-old Peterborough resident has been charged with trafficking cocaine following an investigation.

The Peterborough Police Service’s Drug Unit has been involved in an ongoing investigation into drug trafficking in the City. As a result of the investigation on December 19, 2017 a quantity of a controlled substance believed to be cocaine was seized. Results recently received from Health Canada have confirmed the seized substance was cocaine.

On March 2, 2018 members of the Drug Unit attended a Peterborough residence where the accused was located and placed under arrest.

As a result of the investigation Mackenzie David Smith, 22, of Lansdowne Street, was arrested and charged with trafficking in schedule I substance (cocaine).

The accused appeared in weekend and statutory holiday court on March 3, 2018.

 

Assault with a weapon/forcible confinement Arrest:

A 49-year-old Peterborough man is facing charges including assault with a weapon and forcible confinement following a weekend incident.

On the night of Friday March 2, 2018 the accused attended a Peterborough residence where it was reported that he brandished a knife and threatened the victim, prevented the victim from leaving the house, assaulted the victim and struck him with a vacuum cleaner. The accused and the adult male victim know each other.

On the morning of March 3, 2018 the victim was able to leave the residence. Police were contacted and located the accused in the area of McDonnel Street where, as a result of the investigation, he was arrested and charged.

Robert James Ward, 49, of Rubidge Street, is charged with the following:

• Assault
• Assault with a weapon
• Forcible confinement
• Uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm
• Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
• Fail to comply with a probation order X2

The accused was held in custody and appeared in weekend and statutory holiday court on March 3, 2018.

 

Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose Arrest:

A Peterborough teen has been arrested and charged following an incident at a George Street North shopping centre.

On the morning of March 2, 2018 it was reported that the accused was at a George Street North shopping centre when he was asked by a security guard to leave the premises at which point the accused brandished a pocket knife and threatened the security guard.

Police were called and attended. As a result of the investigation Austin McGowan-Smith, 19, of no fixed address, Peterborough, was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, possession of a schedule II substance (Marijuana under 30grams), fail to comply with a recognize and fail to comply with a sentence.

The accused was held in custody and appeared in court later on March 2, 2018.
