The West Northumberland Wild U15 BB team captured the division championship at its host Halloween Havoc tournament this past weekend.
Featuring youths and adults in competition, the West Northumberland Girls Hockey Association’s annual tournament welcomed teams in a number of divisions with games played in Cobourg, Port Hope, Baltimore and Bewdley during the three days. The U15 BB Wild were the lone local team to emerge victorious.
West Northumberland edged the Ancaster Avalanche 1-0 in that championship final, with Paige Martin scoring the game’s lone goal and goaltender Paisley Dafoe-Shred earning the shutout in net.
“We faced some tough opponents, but came together as a team to pull out the big win,” said Zara Caletti, who scored twice in the U15 BB Wild’s semifinal win over the Ottawa Ice on Saturday. “It was awesome to win the tournament in front of a hometown crowd.”
The Wild advanced to the final with a 3-1 victory over Ottawa in the semifinals. Scarlett McNulty also scored in addition to Caletti’s two markers.
West Northumberland opened the tournament Friday with a convincing 5-1 victory over the Hamilton Hawks. Tessa Cavanaugh scored twice, while Olivia Ellis, Alia Smith and Haylee Brooking added singles.
The Wild followed that with a 5-2 loss against Ottawa later Friday. Greta Coyle and Ellis scored for West Northumberland
The team wrapped up its preliminary round schedule Saturday with a 2-2 tie against Ancaster with Ellis and Coyle again providing the offence.
The tournament championship adds to what has been a strong start to the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association season for West Northumberland. The Wild have earned two wins and two ties through their first four games of league play.
West Northumberland’s U15 BB roster includes goaltenders Brooklyn Bowman and Paisley Dafoe-Shred, along with Addy Ambeault, Haylee Brooking, Zara Caletti, Tessa Cavanaugh, Greta Coyle, Rylee Davey, Olivia Ellis, Addy Kimball, Paige Martin, Tayah Matthews, Josephine McCulloch, Scarlett McNulty, Lauren Skinner, Alia Smith and Maddie Walker.
