The host Northumberland Jacks 8-and-under team battled its way through the Ontario Baseball Association championship weekend before seeing its provincial title hopes come to an end Sunday.
The Jacks fell 16-11 to the London Talons in the final at Legion Fields in Cobourg after an impressive run through the double-elimination tournament.
Northumberland had already shown it could compete with London, defeating the Talons 9-7 on Saturday. The Jacks suffered a loss to Scarborough on Saturday, putting them one defeat away from elimination, but they kept their tournament alive with a narrow 15-14 victory over Pickering later that day.
Sunday afternoon, Northumberland needed to defeat Scarborough – which lost to London in a morning match-up – to earn a berth in the provincial final. The Jacks did just that, setting up another meeting with London for the championship.
Northumberland came out firing in Sunday’s final, scoring six runs in the top of the first inning. London answered with four runs of its own to keep the game within reach.
The Talons then gradually took control, scoring three runs in each of the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to pull away and secure the provincial championship with the victory.
It was an impressive first OBA outing for Northumberland’s 8U team, which included Jude Amos, Ethan Black, Henrik Charysz, Jackson Clarey, Finley Cromlish, Nash Dudley, Jack Gifford, Joe Mercer, Jack Minifie, Eddie Reyns, Brody Skrinek and Maxwell Throop.
