Northumberland County Council Proclaims Two Observances

By Cecilia Nasmith/Northumberland 89.7 FM/Today’s Northumberland
On Wednesday, Northumberland County council approved two proclamations for observances that will take place in the coming weeks – International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Jan. 27 and Black History Month in February.

Holocaust Remembrance Day will see county headquarters illuminated in yellow and flags lowered to half-mast.

The motion notes that the date is the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp. It serves as an occasion to honour the memory of millions of Holocaust victims, and to promote world-wide education on this tragic chapter in history.

From Feb. 3 to 28, the Pan-African flag will be raised on the Community Flagpole as a symbol of the enduring impact black Canadians have had, and of the inclusive community Northumberland County strives to be.
