Northumberland County Committee Acknowledges Truth and Reconciliation Day

By Cecilia Nasmith/Today’s Northumberland
Monday’s meeting of Northumberland County council’s Public Works Committee (like all county council meetings) began with a territorial acknowledgement – but in honour of the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, committee chair Scott Jibb went a little further and added a moment of silence for the occasion.

Afterwards, addressing a council chambers full of councillors and staff in commemorative orange T-shirts, he added a statement of his own:

“I would like to acknowledge this national Day of Truth and Reconciliation. This day serves as an important reminder of the deep and lasting impacts of residential schools on Indigenous communities across Canada. In recognition of the survivors the families and the intergenerational trauma that continues to endure, we reflect on the importance of truth in our shared path toward reconciliation.”
