Northumberland County – Roadwork Bid is Good News

Northumberland County will get more roadwork done than expected with what was allocated in its 2024 budget, council’s Public Works committee heard Monday.
A report from Infrastructure Manager Peter Deshane noted that $3.7-million had been approved to tackle three projects – three km. of County Road 15 between County Roads 9 and 18 in Hamilton Township, 3.7 km. of County Road 41 between County Roads 30 and 26 in Brighton, and the entrance to the Bewdley Community Recycling Centre – as well as miscellaneous asphalt padding.
Of the four bids received, Drain Brothers Excavating Limited was the lowest with their bid of $2,789,075.73, including provisional items and non-recoverable HST, putting it under budget by $580,924.
Deshane listed other work that could be tackled with these fund, including rehabilitating 4.9 km. of County Road 64 (in partnership with the Municipality of Brighton), design work for upgrades to County Roads 22 and 25 in Castleton, detailed design and preliminary construction work for improvements to the Welcome intersection, and various maintenance and pavement-preservation jobs.
Deshane noted that, during this work, one lane of traffic would remain open. Committee member John Logel asked how long traffic would be restricted to one lane, but Deshane said the interruptions would be intermittent – a day here and a day there as things progressed.
