The Victorian Order of Nurses will be expanding its presence in the Northam Industrial Park, Cobourg council learned at Monday’s committee-of-the-whole meeting.

The organization has been a tenant in Building 18 since 2016, Treasurer Ian Davey said, and it is now interested in additional space within the building.

“They want to take it over and add to their Adult Day Program,” he said.

They have even obtained additional capital funding so they can share in leasehold improvements, he added.

The Adult Day Program Centre has occupied some 5,244 sq. ft. in the building for almost seven years. The plan is to take on an additional 1,675 sq. ft. for their programming, which provides vital social, recreational and therapeutic activities for seniors and individuals with disabilities – including those with Alzheimer’s disease (or other forms of dementia), cognitive impairment, chronic illness and physical impairments.

The improvements Davey mentioned are budgeted at $120,000, of which the VON will provide $67,000. These include a new exterior door and interior coat closet for the east entrance, new team office, three new interior viewing windows, upgraded kitchen and accessibility enhancements to two washrooms.

“The lease rates are reasonable for this space, and the VON have proven to be an excellent tenant during the first six years of their lease,” Davey’s report said.

“In addition, the VON provide a much-needed and valued service to their clients in the Cobourg and surrounding area from this location.”
