Cobourg Council – Christmas Magic and First Night Return

Changes the province has made to restrictions on outdoor gatherings not only mean Cobourg will have its Santa Claus Parade this year – Christmas Magic and First Night will also proceed.

The vote was taken at Monday’s Cobourg council meeting, when Councillor Adam Bureau amended the motion confirming the Dec. 4 parade at 6 p.m. to add the other events. The date of Christmas Magic will be announced, and First Night will give everyone a chance to greet 2022 with fireworks and outdoor celebration on Dec. 31.

It’s in the budget and provincial restrictions have been lifted, and this will give the time to proceed with these events,” Bureau said.

Deputy Mayor Suzanne Seguin wanted it made clear that the Christmas Magic celebration would not be business-as-usual, with dense crowds gathering on the sidewalk in front of Victoria Hall. Deputy Director of Community Services Teresa Behan agreed, saying it would be a soft version of the usual celebration with no crowding.

I don’t think it would be very good for us to do that at this point,” Behan said.

However, I do know these rules change all the time, so we will follow the regulations of that day.”
