Miedema and Beck Score First OHL Goals

Cobourg’s Ethan Miedema and Port Hope’s Owen Beck both scored their first Ontario Hockey League goals in their regular season debuts.
Miedema scored 16 minutes into the third period as the Windsor Spitfires were doubled up 6-3 by the visiting Sarnia Sting on Thursday evening. The 16-year-old then earned an assist on teammate Pasquale Zito’s tying goal in the third period of Friday’s night’s 3-2 overtime win in Sarnia.
Miedema was selected fourth overall by the Spitfires in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection draft.
Windsor hosts the London Knights on Monday afternoon.
Saturday night in Kingston, the Mississauga Steelheads won by a convincing 7-2 margin against the host Frontenacs.
Beck, who was a second-round draft pick by the Steelheads (29th overall) in 2020, scored Mississauga’s fifth goal of the night just 59 seconds into the second period. The 17-year-old played in all situations, including power play, penalty killing and taking key draws in all areas of the ice. He had 17 faceoff wins in the contest.
In a story published Thursday, Steelheads head coach and general manager James Richmond praised Beck for his strong play at both ends of the ice.
Next up for Beck and the Steelheads is a road game against Port Hope’s Dalyn Wakely and the North Bay Battalion on Friday, Oct. 15.
