Appeasing User Groups Apparently Comes Over Safety in Cobourg

In Editor Choice, Local

It appears Cobourg may be more interested in providing space for user groups rather than safety along the lakeshore.

Last year a small sign was installed by the boat launch of the inner harbour informing user groups and anyone using the beach of bacteria counts in the water.

The sign posted was a Water Quality Forecast that indicated low risk, medium risk or high risk, depending on the bacteria count.

Water quality testing season is done for three areas along the Cobourg Waterfront.

The sign was admittedly hard to read and wasn’t very visible.

Shortly after a much larger sign that was much more easy to read from a distance was installed for the rest of the season.

This year, the smaller sign is once again posted, only it is ever further away from last years small sign making it even more difficult to read from the parking area.

Assistant Manager of Waterfront Operations Julie Behan-Jones said the town made the decision to appease user groups.

“This year we are using the smaller Water Quality Forecast sign to help ensure our West Harbour user groups have enough accessible space for their vessels and classes/programs to continue to operate successfully.”

Behan-Jones added that the larger sign, “was better designated for a larger area” like Victoria Beach.

Behan-Jones said the town has also implemented additional points of information within the dedicated beach page but there is absolutely nothing mentioned regarding bacteria counts of the area in question.
