The West Northumberland Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee (WNPRRC) wish to announce the retirement of Dr. Paul Hazell and the recruitment of Drs. Helena Whyte and Stephen Cornish.

Dr. Hazell is retired effective September 30, 2020. He graduated from University of Toronto in 1972. In 1974 he married Cathy Gray and they moved to Port Hope to start his Medical Practice. They soon had 4 daughters and now 5 grandchildren. Dr Hazell was very active in the previous Port Hope Hospital, the Port Hope Medical Centre and until recently the Northumberland Hills Hospital. To quote Dr Hazell “This is a perfect community to both raise a family and establish a medical practice.”

“On behalf of his patients and the community of West Northumberland the WNPRRC would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Hazell for his outstanding contribution to the health and wellbeing of his patients.” stated Maria Gomez, WNPRRC Director.

The WNPRRC is very pleased to announce that newly recruited Drs. Whyte and Cornish are the successors over the practice of Dr. Hazell.

Dr. Whyte studied Medicine at Western University and completed her Family Medicine residency in London. She completed a fellowship in Obstetrics & Women’s Health in London and Chatham. Dr. Whyte has always been passionate about Women’s Health and plans to deliver babies at Northumberland Hospital in addition to her office-based practice.

Dr. Cornish also studied Medicine at Western University and completed his Family Medicine residency in London, acting as the Chief Family Medical Resident in 2016-2017. He has practiced in London for the past 3 years as well as holding appointments at St. Joseph’s Health Care and Western University. Dr. Cornish will provide Hospitalist and Palliative Care to patients of the practice.

Drs. Whyte and Cornish stated that, “We are thrilled to be joining the Ganaraska Family Health Organization. It is an honour to accept the torch from Dr. Hazell, a vital physician for the Port Hope area for many years. We love the community of Port Hope and look forward to making this our home and raising our family here.”

“Thanks to the West Northumberland Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee for ensuring a smooth transfer of my Practice to Dr. Helena Whyte and Dr. Steve Cornish. I have had a great career Port Hope. I wish everyone well and no doubt will continue to see many of you around town.” – Dr. Paul Hazell

“The WNPRRC along with the Port Hope physicians are very pleased to welcome to our community Drs. Whyte and Cornish. We are hopeful for West Northumberland to be their home for many years to come,” said Gerald Blackstock, Chair of the Committee.
Thanks to support from the community and the much-needed financial support from west Northumberland municipalities, the WNPRRC is positioned to maintain its recruitment initiatives and recruitment momentum in order to continue attracting family physicians to our area.
Drs Whyte and Cornish will be taking over the entire patient roster of Dr. Hazell and will not be accepting any new patients at the present time.
